** Post-GKAS 2010 PRESS RELEASE **
DENTAL ASSOCIATION THANKS GKAS DENTAL VOLUNTEERS FOR PROVIDING
NEEDY LAKE COUNTY CHILDREN FREE DENTAL CARE
For the 4th consecutive year, the Lake County Dental Association (LCDA) in collaboration with the Lake County Health Department and the Florida Department of Health Volunteer Health Care Provider Program (VHCPP) partnered to give underprivileged children, between the ages of 3–17 years old, access to free dental services. This coordinated local effort is part of the American Dental Association’s (ADA) national dental access-to-care campaign, better known as Give Kids a Smile (GKAS).
The purpose of GKAS is to encourage parents, health professionals, policymakers and everyone who cares about children, to help combat and address this important health issue - the ‘silent epidemic’ of dental disease. According to the US Surgeon General, tooth decay is the most chronic disease affecting American children, five (5) times more common than asthma. Recent CDC reports indicate that tooth decay among preschoolers is on the rise, reversing a 50-year trend.
On February 26, 2010, local Lake County dentists distributed free educational materials, toothbrushes and toothpaste, as well as provided free dental examinations, cleanings, fluoride treatments and preventive sealants. The group of 32 dentist and staff volunteers screened 87 children and performed over $35,000 of dental services on this single day. 59 of the 87 children were provided referrals to local area dentists to have additional dental procedures such as fillings, extractions and root canals, to be performed in the dentists’ respective private offices. Last year, the LCDA-GKAS program provided over $115,000 of dental services to underprivileged children.
On behalf of the children and families, the LCDA would like to recognize the GKAS Coordinators Dr. Ted Bland and Dr. Timothy Pruett for their passionate support and efforts in organizing this year’s Event. The LCDA also wish to extend a warm, heartfelt THANK YOU to the following dentists and staff for their generous time, talents and compassion without whom this would not be possible.
